For most UK charities, winter is the make or break season. Research reported by Civil Society found that half of UK adults say they always or usually give over the festive period, compared with 34% who give regularly during the rest of the year. November and December are the peak months, driven by Christmas appeals, Giving Tuesday, Children in Need and the Poppy Appeal.
That demand is only useful if supporters can act on it. A donation platform is the point where a good intentioned donor either gives or drifts away. Here’s how to make sure they give.
1. Make the donation journey fast on mobile
Winter donors are often impulse donors. They see an appeal on social media, in an email or on a carol service order of service, and they decide within seconds. Every extra form field costs you gifts.
- Offer Apple Pay and Google Pay so a donation takes a couple of taps.
- Pre select sensible suggested amounts, with a middle option that anchors donors towards a slightly higher gift.
- Keep the form to a single page, and test it on a phone before the season starts.
2. Tie every ask to something tangible
Donors give more readily when they can picture what their money does. “Help us this winter” is vague. “£15 keeps a warm meal on the table for a family for a week” is not. Build your suggested amounts around concrete outcomes and show them on the donation page itself, not only in the email that got people there.
Winter gives you a natural story: warmth, food, company, safety. Use it, and keep the message consistent from the first email through to the donation page, so the donor never wonders whether they’ve landed in the right place.
3. Use deadlines that are real
Urgency works when it’s honest. Winter provides several genuine deadlines you can build campaigns around:
- Giving Tuesday (1 December 2026): a ready made moment for a launch push.
- Christmas: the emotional peak, and the point at which many donors choose to give instead of buying presents.
- 31 December: the last chance to give in the calendar year, which prompts a final wave of donations.
A visible countdown or progress bar towards a target helps, as long as the target and the end date are genuine.
4. Switch on match funding
Match funding is one of the most effective winter tactics because it gives donors a reason to give now rather than later. When a major donor, trust or corporate partner agrees to match gifts up to a set total, every pound a supporter gives is worth double. Your online donation platform should let you display the match total and how much of it remains, so donors can see that their gift counts.
5. Capture Gift Aid at the point of giving
For UK taxpayers, Gift Aid adds 25p to every £1 donated at no cost to the donor. Winter is when you receive the most first time and one off gifts, so every missed declaration is money left behind.
- Make the Gift Aid tick box prominent, not buried.
- Show the donor what their gift becomes with Gift Aid added.
- Make sure the declaration is stored properly, so claims are straightforward later.
6. Turn supporters into fundraisers
Christmas is full of natural fundraising moments: carol concerts, Secret Santa swaps, Christmas jumper days, festive challenges and workplace collections. Peer to peer fundraising pages let supporters turn those moments into donations from their own networks, which means your reach grows without extra spend. Give fundraisers a simple page setup, a shareable link and a live total, and they’ll promote you.
7. Offer a monthly gift alongside the one off
Many winter donors are giving for the first time. Without a prompt, most will never give again. Add a clear option to turn a one off gift into a monthly donation, and frame it around continuing the impact: “Keep the warmth going all year.” Even a small percentage of festive donors switching to recurring giving can change next year’s income.
8. Plan the thank you before the campaign launches
The most overlooked part of winter fundraising is what happens after the gift. Send an immediate confirmation, then a proper update within a few weeks showing what the money achieved. Donors who feel their gift made a difference are far more likely to give again in spring, when the competition for attention has faded.
